OK but better out there3

Customer Reviews

"From Novie To Expert", Seriously!5
"From Novice To Expert", Seriously
I really loved this video! You can tell that Marie Kauffman loves working with Gel candles. This is the 5th video from Gatehouse Candles that I have seen, and while they have all been very good, this one is just outstanding. The video takes you from the most basic type of Gel candle through fairly involved candles that use other type of waxes as well. One lesson builds on the next, giving the needed experience to tackle the more complicated candles. The advice on working with embeds and how to use "scrap" wax was worth the cost alone. I just love the Maple Pecan Sundae and Ice Tea Set Projects, but I think the Strawberry Pie and Fruit Preserve candles will sell better for me.

Pros:
Very detailed instructions
Overhead shots during the detailed parts help a lot
Great Tips and Tricks
Great safety advice
Every major type of Gel candle included

Cons:
None! This is the best candlemaking video I have ever seen (and I have a lot of them)

If you are interested in Gel candles, or candle making in general, this video is for you! Highly recommended.

Candle Making Step by Step Review

Candle Making Step-by-Step
By Cheryl Owen

Customer Reviews

I can't believe that no one has written a review for this!!5
This book starts out with defining different materials, waxes, molds,coloring/scenting,and wicks. It tells you how to prepare the wick;how to level the bottom of the candle;and how to use containers found in all homes. It has sections on beeswax candles, making tapers at home, making your own molds, painting and applique candles, layering candles, making floating flowers by hand, imbedding, gel candles(small section),making stacked candles, hurricane(shell)candles, stencilling, wrapped candle ideas, stick candles for the yard, marbling candles, and frosted candles. This book includes templates, variations and tips in the sections and all pages are either full colored pictures or have multiple pictures. Many of the crafts are even explained with pictures to show the novice how to make candles. I have bought around 30 books on candles and I still like this very much. It shows you how to make candles from nothing but the wax and your hands. I can't say enough about this book...

Making Aromatherapy Creams and Lotions Book Review

Making Aromatherapy Creams and Lotions: 101 Natural Formulas to Revitalize & Nourish Your Skin
By Donna Maria

Customer Reviews

There is just one problem4
The book is very informative and there are many creams recipes But there are no preservatives so it is really does not so commercial...

Kind of a wierd book...2
This book is not exactly what I expected. While the author is obviously knowledgeable, the information in the book is organized in somewhat of a confusing fashion and the recipes are often complicated. Some of the raw ingredients required are obscure and hard to find. Ultimately I think that this book would only appeal to a pretty small niche market.

good book5
I liked this book because it explained in detail, the proper use of ingredients. It gives easy to use formulas as well as giving explanations of why certain ingredients were used and substitutions of ingredients to get the results you desire. Some reviewers said the products were difficult to find, but with a simple web search, I found Glory Bees Food to be an excellent source. This book is a great start if you want to start a business. It helps you to understand the process of formulation. Thus far, this is my favorite book on the subject.

Milk-Based Soaps: Making Natural, Skin-Nourishing Soap

Milk-Based Soaps: Making Natural, Skin-Nourishing Soap
By Casey Makela

Customer Reviews

Milk Based Soaps5
I love this book! This is actually my second copy after lending my first one to a friend. I have recomended this book to quite a few friends that also have goats and too much milk. This is the best basic book on the market!

This book is like having one muffin recipe you really like. 4
Do you have a muffin recipe that you love? This book is like having a favorite muffin recipe with many variations. I guess if it is your favorite don't argue with it. But, this book is full of variations of a basic recipe.
It is a nice book, but I had hoped for more variety.
But, I do love muffins.

Worth having if you want to make whoke like soaps.4
I was initailly intimidated by this book and I owned it for a while before I attempted her methods. But if you want to make soap with real milk (not powdered as an additive) this is a great resource. Making whole milk soap is not easy. This methods works. I admit I use a stick blender and keep it in one pot but my milk has never curdled due to her cold bath method. Her recipes produce gentle, silky soaps and are made with readily available ingredients. My main complaint with some of the other books is that you cannot get many of the ingredients unless you go online and pay shipping. I agree with another reviewer that she does not explain the why behind some of her methods. I think the glycerine and the sugar are for more lather but I'm not positive. I know the amount of honey is limited due to the risk of the soap overheating in the mold. My only other concern about her recipes is that they do not produce much lather and I like bubbles. However, now that I know the method and have had a lot of success I can experiment with the recipes to customize the soap.

Soapmaker's Companion: A Comprehensive Guide with Recipes, Techniques & Know-How

Soapmaker's Companion: A Comprehensive Guide with Recipes, Techniques & Know-How (Natural Body Series - The Natural Way to Enhance Your Life)
By Susan Miller Cavitch

Customer Reviews

The Soapmaker's Companion5
I absolutely LOVE this book! It really is a soapmaker's "Bible". It is very easy to read and is organized in a way that you really can get started right away.

I originally checked this book out from the library, but after reading a few sections I ordered two copies: one to use and one to keep in my reference library.

It is so easy to use and the language is so easy to understand that it takes the mystery out of soapmaking and replaces it with fun.

We have enjoyed using the recipes in this book as well as creating our own. If you ever dreamed of making your own soap, this is the perfect book to start with.

Methods are Dated3
I really enjoy this book for ideas and inspiration. She has some truly wonderful soaping ideas in here, and I love just browsing through it.

That being said, I really don't use it that much. The recipes call for too many ingredients, are WAY to heavily superfatted to last, and her mixing method (in a stand mixer) takes forever. I can stick blend my soap to trace in just a couple of minutes.

We've also found out a few things about grapefruit seed extract since this book was published. Basically, it does little to nothing to preserve the shelf life of your soaps....a lot of reputable suppliers are pulling it from the retail inventory and substituting other antioxidants.

If you're looking for some interesting ideas, by all means invest, but don't make this your first book.

Great guide to making soap at home5
I found her information very helpful and clear. My mother also uses this book and is the one who suggested it to me. She has been making soap at home for years and finds this book the best one she's seen.

Making Candles & Soaps For Dummies (For Dummies (Sports & Hobbies))

Making Candles & Soaps For Dummies (For Dummies (Sports & Hobbies))
By Kelly Ewing

Customer Reviews

The Weakest of Books, Better Available3
The Weakest of Books, Better Available

Being a professional candle maker (3rd generation) and an avid reader, I have a huge collection of candle and soap making books. After looking over "Making Candles & Soaps for Dummies" for perhaps the 3rd time, I can honestly say that there are many better books covering both subjects. This book covers only the very basic information and will leave you with more questions than answers.

For the candle side, I highly recommend Beginner's Guide to Candlemaking or the instructional video Introduction To Candle Making

On the soap side, try Smart Soapmaking: The Simple Guide to Making Traditional Handmade Soap Quickl Safely, and Reliably, or How to Make Luxurious Handcrafted Soaps for Family, Friends, and Yourself.

These are both great hobbies that can become good sideline business and there are good resources available on the subject... this book is not one of them.

Not as helpful as others in the "Dummies" series2
I usually love the "Dummies" books and was hoping this one could teach me about soapmaking. It really didn't have much in the way of helpful information and I ended it returning it.

Great for melt and pour soap creations4
I did not read the sections on candle making, so this review is strictly based on the soap sections. I found this book to be one of the most helpful ones I've read (I checked out a lot from the library). True, it does not cover the cold process, but as the more simple, melt and pour method is all that I'm interested in, this book is right on target for my needs.

In addition to the color and fragrance info, it discusses stenciled soap, soap on a rope, variegated soap, embedded soap, three-dimensional soap, imprinted soap, soap balls, customized shampoo, massage oil, bath salts liquid soap and more.

I also enjoyed Chapter 19 which is devoted entirely to aromatherapy. It lets you know what a particular scent is noted for (i.e. boosting memory, fighting infections, relieving congestion, calming effect, etc.), as well as whether it is photosensitizing (increases your chance for a sunburn), a possible irritant to sensitive skin, possesses antibacterial qualities, etc.

Creative Soap Molds

If you are interested in making your own soap then you will need to find soap molds. There are many different types of soap molds including character molds, simple molds, silicone molds, and wood molds. The type of soap molds that you use will depend on the soap making process that you use, the type of wax that you use, and your design preferences.

The first type of soap molds that you can buy are basic soap making molds. These molds are generally rectangular in shape, and are made from either wood or silicone. Wooden molds will need to lined with wax paper, plastic wrap, or greased to prevent the soap from sticking to the mold. Some silicone soap molds will need to be lined to prevent the soap from sticking to the mold, however, some are designed for quick release even without the liner.

If you are interested in more intricate soap molds then you can choose from several different soap mold types. First there are holiday themed soap molds such as Halloween, Christmas, and Easter soap molds. If you don’t want a holiday themed soap design, but you still want an interesting soap mold shape, then you can choose from a modern or contemporary soap mold design.

Your final choice for shaping soap is to hand-roll the soap into soap balls. To do this you will need to mix up your soap and then allow it to cool slightly so that you can handle the mixture. Next you will need to scoop out the soap and roll it between your palms to form the soap ball.

For more information on how to make homemade soap as well as soap making recipes visit the PureandNaturalSoaps.com

Soap Making Supplies

Homemade soap making is easy when you have the right tools, equipment and ingredients. Soap making supplies start with the basics, but there are also plenty of additional products available to help your soap making projects more interesting.

Basic soap making supplies - essential tools and equipment:

? A good set of weighing scales. These should be accurate and reliable, and be cable of measuring small amounts.
? Heat resistant pitcher for measuring your soap making ingredients. This must be capable of withstanding high temperatures, so a good tip is to look for a dishwasher safe pitcher. The container needs to be at least 2 quart capacity in either glass or plastic for soap making.
? Supplies of stainless steel spoons, or a few small cups for measuring oils and other soap making additives.
? The soap making pot, with lid. Ideally this will hold at least 8 quarts and should be stainless steel or enamel, but smaller soap pots can be used for lower quantities of soap making ingredients.
? Plastic or wooden stick for stirring the lye soap mixture. Your stick or spoon must have a long enough handle to safely stir the soap, making sure that your hands don't reach too far into the pot.
? Stainless steel thermometer. This is needed to accurately gauge the temperature of your soap making solution.
? A soap mold to pour your soap making mixture into, to let it set.
? Safety goggles and rubber gloves.

Other handy soap making supplies include a stick blender, which makes the soap making process a bit faster, and litmus paper to test the pH of your soap.

Soap making supplies - main ingredients:

Lye - or sodium hydroxide is essential for soap making. Supplies of Red Devil Lye can be found at grocery stores, but may be behind the counter, so be sure to ask if you can't find it on the shelves.

Water - for soap making is best if it's distilled water, bottled water or even rain water supplies to keep it as pure as possible.

Fats and oils - the most common fats used in soap making are pork lard and beef tallow, but vegetable fat can also be used. Oils such as coconut oil or olive oil are added to give the soap its moisturizing properties as well as making it lather. Supplies of fats and oils are easily sourced on your supermarket shelves.

Fragrance oils - added in to the soap making process to give your soap a pleasant smell. Essential oils are also a popular choice in soap making recipes.

These are all the tools and ingredients you need to start making your own homemade soap. Soap making supplies are easy to find locally, but there are also many products available online, including starter kits for beginners.

Marie Ackland - Soap making was originally a hobby of mine that gave me great pleasure, theres something quite satisfying about creating from scratch a beautifully scented bar of soap.

It then turned into a full time passion, creating wonderful soap for family and friends to enjoy. When a friend surgested I take some along to a local craft fair, which I did and from that day on I never looked back. I now have a great soap business which makes a healthy profit and gives me great satisfaction.

So now 20 years on from my first batch I love to teach the art of soap making. It can be frustrating at first but if you learn the fundamentals and put into practice my methods you WILL have great soap every time.
